Need more convincing? Here are four reasons why we love Wise Man:

  1. Like Bottle Theory, Wise Man started with a PhD and a homebrew kit.

Sam, a Ph.D. chemist by day, bought himself a homebrew kit and started experimenting. The only rules were to have fun, make something tasty, and clean up afterward.

As he got deeper into the hobby, friends began to ask Sam when he would open his own brewery. Imagination began to take flight. He shared his idea with friends Jason and Mike and together with their families, they decided to take the leap.

2. Wise Man revived a 90-year-old building that had been vacant for a decade

Across the world, breweries have breathed life into vacant buildings, forgotten neighborhoods, and injected an economic boost wherever they open. In Winston-Salem, Wise Man did just that when the breathed life into the former Angelo Brothers building that had been vacant for nearly a decade and needed some serious repairs. Most impressively, the Wise Man team took care to retain the building’s original character.

3. The brewery is one of Pavel’s favorite pit stops when heading west

Whenever we head to the mountains of western NC, we always make a pit stop at Wise Man and pick up some beers to go. Located 1 hr 30 minutes from Bottle Theory, the Wise Man taproom has plenty of parking, outdoor seating, and is dog-friendly. You might even get lucky and stumble upon a local food truck or live music.

4. Consistently great beer across so many distinct styles

The range of styles brewed at Wise Man is quite impressive, but the consistent quality across those distinct styles really sets them apart. In fact, they won the top prize from the Great American Beer Festival for their “Outraged Daughters” Irish Red. Here are some of our favorites, which you can find at Bottle Theory.

  • Kelly’s go-to is “Mountain Calling” American IPA. This flagship beer is hop forward with clean, citrusy flavors. The John Muir reference is also always appreciated.

  • Pavel picks the BBA “Merry World” Breakfast Stout, aged for 6 months in bourbon barrels. Black Mountain Chocolat, and the lingering touch of Buffalo Trace combine to form one of our warmest, richest, and most endlessly inviting brews.

  • Crowd-Pleaser: Angelo’s Pils (featured in our NC Beers as Taylor Swift Eras) is equal parts old and new school. A traditional pilsner base plus a dry-hop of Saphir and Spalter Select, give herbal, floral, and spice notes. The resulting beer is as drinkable as it is interesting. It's named after the Angelo family who built the original building.

  • Something Unique: True Chaos Fruited Berliner Wiesse (sour) Inspired by the famed Ramos Gin Fizz, this refreshing Berliner Weisse screams citrus, with orange, lemon, and lime. Bright citrus fades into delicate juniper and a balanced sweetness from lactose and orange peel.

Cheers to Wise Man Brewing!

Come meet the Wise Man team, sample beer, and maybe win some swag on August 8th. RSVP on Facebook or add to your calendar.
