Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival, is a cultural phenomenon that attracts millions of visitors to Munich, Germany, and inspired countless celebrations worldwide. This annual event is a glorious ode to Bavarian culture, beer, and camaraderie. If you can’t make it to Germany this year, host your own Oktoberfest party!
Oktoberfest traces its roots back to October 12, 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. To celebrate this royal union, a grand public festival was organized in the fields outside Munich's city gates. The event was such a hit that it became an annual tradition, evolving into the Oktoberfest we know today. This celebration of Bavarian culture and beer quickly gained international acclaim.
Oktoberfest traditionally begins in late September and extends into the first weekend in October, running for 16-18 days. The official 188th Oktoberfest in 2023 will take place from September 16 to October 3 in Theresienwiese, a vast fairground in Munich, Germany. 1. Decorations for Oktoberfest
We like to create a festive atmosphere by going a little crazy with the decorations. Most are available on Amazon with 2-day delivery. Start with:
Table Settings: Use checkered tablecloths
Beer Steins: Provide traditional beer steins or mugs for your guests to use during the event (these can be used for games, too!)
Bavarian Flags: Hang a string of flags around the perimeter
Fall Foliage: Incorporate autumnal elements like pumpkins, gourds, and leaves for a seasonal touch!
2. Outfits for Oktoberfest
Dirndls and Lederhosen: Traditional bavarian outfits are part of the fun. We recommend something comfortable if you’ll be outdoors all day.
Hats and Accessories: Even if you don’t go with the full outfit, hats, suspenders, and other accessories give a festive touch.
3. Food for Oktoberfest
Our friend and neighbor, Trish, spoiled us with homemade German food. If you’re hosting at home, you can look for recipes or pre-made options for some classics:
Pretzels: Serve soft pretzels with mustard for dipping.
Sausages: Bratwurst, Weisswurst, and other sausages are Oktoberfest staples.
Sauerkraut: Pair sauerkraut with sausages or as a side dish.
Potato Salad: A classic German potato salad.
Schnitzel: Breaded and fried pork or chicken schnitzel is a crowd-pleaser.
4. Activities for Oktoberfest
Beer Tasting: Organize a beer-tasting session where guests can sample and rate different brews. We like to do a blind taste test.
Stein Holding Contest: Challenge your guests with a stein-holding competition to test their strength and endurance. We recommend using water for the contest!
Music: Create a festive playlist featuring traditional German music and Oktoberfest classics. Spotify has some great options.
Photo Booth: Arrange a photo booth with Oktoberfest-themed props for memorable snapshots.
5. Oktoberfest Beer
One of the highlights of Oktoberfest is the beer, particularly the Märzen style. Märzen, meaning "March" in German, was traditionally brewed in March and stored in cool cellars to be enjoyed during the hot summer months. However, over time, the brewing season shifted, and Märzen became the designated beer for Oktoberfest. This amber lager is known for its rich malty sweetness, balanced by a crisp finish. It typically boasts an alcohol content of 5-6%.
